pain, to begin with
flat slap of water, falling
into the cauldron

after is the burn
caustic ravager adheres
inescapable

a roiling deluge
stripping away delusions
flesh peeled by degrees

roughened hide, removed
synapses raw and shrieking
you did ask for this

time saps the heat away
equilibrium returns
ragged, calming breath…

Free Verse

it starts with a germ
a single grain of sand
grit
detritus
that slips past the calcified bounds
and lodges in the soft meat within

sharp edges scrape
inflame
irritate
discomfort demands a reckoning

and so the first layer is applied
a mollifying balm of self
thick
glutinous
that envelops the offensive parts
blankets truth…
